A practical workbook for school data migration
How to organise sources, owners, and cleaning rules before moving records.
A migration succeeds when every source has an owner and a clear acceptance rule. Put student, employee, class, and balance files into one inventory. Record the source system, extraction date, and person responsible for approving the result.
Clean before conversion
Define required fields, naming rules, duplicate identifiers, and invalid values. Do not hide conflicts behind a quick conversion. Put them in an exception list with an agreed resolution path. Keep a dated copy of every export so tests can be repeated.
Validate samples and totals
Test a varied sample of records, then reconcile important totals such as active students, balances, and registration states. The data owner should approve the result before the team moves to the next source.
